It's after 11 pm...

...and our birthday celebration is finally winding down. We just walked in the door from visiting with my parents again. I'm so exhausted, I was falling asleep at the stop lights. I will share all the mundane details tomorrow. Don't forget to turn your clocks back tonight!! Yay, an extra hour of sleep, glorious sleep!!!

Maybe I've taken things a little too far...

This is what my thermostat says right now. I just walked in the door from a long day. I stayed late at work, then had to drive to Stud's school to pick him up. We stopped at home just long enough to let Buster out, then we were on our way to the bank, then met Bestest Friend for dinner. From there, we stopped at my parents' for a quick visit, which turned into a much longer visit because my niece stopped by. It's nearly 10:30, and we're just getting home. I'm so tired, I can hardly think straight. And, sadly, we have to be up very bright and early tomorrow because we're going downtown to an open house at one of the colleges Stud is considering. WTF?! How do I have a child who is OLD enough to be considering freakin' college!?!?!?

I know he's old enough, though, because tomorrow, my 'baby' will turn 17. Seven-friggin-teen!!!! That's the age I was when I met his father. THAT is terrifying! I'm having kind of a hard time accepting the fact that my baby went from 0-17 in a nanosecond. I'm not ready to be the parent of an adult. His father made sure to remind him that if he gets arrested now, he'll be tried as an adult. Yeah...great words of wisdom, CSJ!

So far, the game plan is to go downtown to the open house at Columbia College, then just hang out downtown for a while. The weather will be playing a big part in our plans, since I'm not sure how cold it will be, and I don't think Stud will want to be walking around in the cold very long.

OK, my fingers are pretty frozen and numb, so I'm going to have to stop typing, and get under my covers. Alas, we didn't get any snow again today. Poop.

:)

The weather guy just said it's 34, with a windchill of 27. What a perfect way to start my day!!

I'm so tired...

...I almost blew NaBloPoMo! Like I mentioned yesterday, last night was Report Card Pick Up night at the Hell-Hole. It actually went much better than anticipated. I had 12 parents in before our lunch break, and another 9 after lunch. That's 21 out of 26. Not too shabby! And, out of the 5 babies whose parents didn't show, 3 were new students that I've received in the past week and a half, 1 was a student who's been out for the past 3 weeks, and the last one is a boy I had last year whose mother didn't step foot in the school ONCE last year. She didn't come to either Report Card Pick Up last year, either, so I wasn't that surprised she didn't show.

I put together this little "treat" for the parents who showed up.

It's just microwave popcorn, with a label I printed on my computer. Totally cute, right? And, it scored me some major brownie points with New Principal. However, I can't take all the credit. This was actually an idea I came across on another teacher blog (I'm so sorry, I don't remember which one) in the beginning of the year. I had planned to do it at Open House, but you may remember that my aunt passed away that week, so I wasn't at Open House. I was excited to do it for Report Card Pick Up night, and the parents loved it.

After the night ended at the Hell-Hole, I rushed straight to Stud's school (as much as you can rush a half-hour drive!) where he was waiting with a couple of friends. By the time I drove his friends home, we had just enough time to walk in the door, heat up some soup (yay for left-overs!) and walk right back out the door for our hair appointments. I picked up my sister on the way.

For some reason, she chose last night to make a big change. That translated into a VERY long night.

Stud got a haircut. I may have mentioned that when my girlfriend cut his hair a few weeks ago, it was seriously the BEST haircut he's every had. He LOVED it. She gave him a faux-hawk, which you may remember made it into his self-portrait. His hair grows so fast that, despite just getting it cut about 3 weeks ago, he was ready for a trim. I figured it was best to do it now, while it still had it's 'shape,' so my friend would remember how she cut it. (Our girlfriend who does our hair has been our friend since high school. She owns the salon we go to. We always tease her because she almost never remembers from one visit to the next what the hell she does to our hair! But, it always looks great. Every time she's ever cut Stud's hair, it's been different. I figured I'd try and help her keep this 'new' looks, since he liked it so much.)

Naturally, my girlfriend styled Stud's hair with all these different products, so it looked great when she was finished. But, like I said, thanks to my sister, we were there WAY longer than I would have liked, especially since Stud was with me. We didn't leave the salon until after midnight. By the time I drove my sister home, and pulled into our garage, it was nearly 1am. That would explain the fact that Stud looks a bit stoned in these pictures. And, his 'do drooped a bit by then. I was only going to post the two cutest ones, but then I realized, he can't take a bad picture. :) So, here's the whole photo shoot.

I love this one. I love how his eyes disappear when he's genuinely smiling.

Despite how excited the damn weathermen here got me, we didn't get any snow today. Damn. It did rain, though, on and off all day. I had to stay for a meeting after school today, and when I came out, the skies looked very stormy. It was just starting to rain again. The sky looked so crazy as I was driving home. To the south, it was pretty clear, to the north, it looked almost black. I took this picture from my car (don't worry, I was stopped at a red light!) facing east. I just couldn't believe how weird the sky looked. There were dark storm clouds, beautiful white, fluffy clouds, and the prettiest peek of sky blue, all in one place.
For the past few hours, it's been storming outside. The rain has been slamming into my bedroom window. It almost sounds like hail. Even though we didn't get snow during the day, the new predication is that it will come over night or tomorrow. I'm still holding out hope!

It's about 54 in my house right now. I'm cuddled up in bed, wrapped in....wait for it.... A SNUGGIE! Yes, I actually own one. Stop laughing! Stud and his dad bought it for me, I think almost as a joke, over the summer. It's zebra-striped! (Wait, I have TWO Snuggies, but I'll tell you about that tomorrow.) Being all snuggled up, with a storm going on outside, is just a perfect night to me.

Holy crap! After being worried about not having anything to write about for NaBloPoMo, so far these have been some of the longest posts I've ever written. Sorry about that...

Are my eyes deceiving me?

Could that really be frost covering my neighbor's roof? What a perfect thing to see first thing this morning! I'm going to keep holding on to the hope that the prediction of snow for tomorrow comes true. :)

Today is Report Card Pick Up Day at the Hell-Hole (and all other CPS Track E schools) So, I don't have to work until noon. Despite promising myself that I would sleep in this morning, I was up at my usual time, mostly because I had to make Stud's lunch. I also have a huge mountain of dishes that needs to be dealt with, but I'm giving myself a little "me" time first. Since I woke up early, I decided I would sit here, in bed, under my warm, comfy (penguin!) flannel sheets and read blogs, check emails, etc., until the time I would normally walk out the door for work.

The reason for the mountain of dishes is that I had a few girls from work over for dinner last night. I prepared a 'soup bar.' I had three crockpots lined up on my counter with Potato Corn Chowder, Chicken Tortilla Soup, and Vegetable Soup. I also had lots of crusty bread with butter, perfect for dipping into hot soup. Before we got to the soup, we munched on veggies and dip for a while. We finished with some fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies. It was a lovely evening, if I do say so myself. I don't usually prepare such a simple spread, but I'm thinking I need to do this more often.

Too bad I have to face the clean up today. As much as a LOVE to cook and bake, I'm not so big on the clean up part. I wish I had a crew that would come in every night to clean up my kitchen for me. I would do LOTS more cooking if that were the case.

I would have done the clean up last night (just so I didn't have to wake up to the mess!) but Stud decided I needed to meet his new 'friend''s mother last night. WTF?! He's been 'talking' to a new girl recently, and is completely smitten. He made plans to go to her house after school yesterday to hang out and help her with some math and science. And, yes, her mother was there, I made sure. Then, later they went to Youth Group at the church she attends. Her mother drove them there and then picked them up, and agreed to drive Stud home. Stud had asked me if he could bring them back to the house for dessert (because he knew I was having company and assumed there'd be some good desserts) but then never got back to me about it. I assumed that meant they weren't coming.

Well, imagine my surprise when he gets home, and The Friend and her mom walk in behind him! My house was a mess! And, because there weren't as many of my friends here as I had planned, I didn't go crazy with dessert. There were just the cookies. Stud was mortified. (He's used to me going overboard and having cookies, brownies, cake AND pie!) We (me, The Friend and her mom) had cookies and tea while we watched Stud devour a bowl of each of the three soups and about a half a loaf of bread. (Sheesh! Teenage boys!) The Friend seems to be just as smitten with Stud as he is with her, which truthfully, worries me a bit. Her mom seems to find him amusing, and to hear Stud tell it, "She LOVES me!" I'm trying not to think about it too much, as I really don't want to deal with another 'girlfriend' situation. My heart can't take it. :(

Holy moly!! Maybe I should have split this (long and boring!) post up and used it for a couple days! What the heck will I write about tomorrow? Oh, who am I kidding?! I'll have stories from tonight to share! Anytime the parents come to the Hell-Hole, there are always some good stories.

This technically counts as a post, right?

Oh happy day!! This was in Monday's Sun Times. I read it last night right before going to bed. It was the perfect way to end my day! :) Hell, it just may make today start off on a high note!

***Um...holy crap!!! I had this scheduled to post at 6am! I don't know what happened! It's 8:30 PM, and this is the first time I've been on the computer today. I bet you thought I messed up already, didn't you? Didn't YOU?! Ha!

NaBloPoMo Day 1

Ok, here it is - my first post for NaBloPoMo. And, whatta ya know, I have nothing to say. Sheesh, this is gonna be a loonngg month....

Well, I suppose I can tell you all about how I hid from trick-or-treaters all day yesterday. Yes, I really did. I know, what a wicked witch, right? I just was NOT in a very Halloween-y place this year. Most of you know it's been a very rough and stressful year for me. The past few weeks have been particularly hard, and I just wasn't feeling it. Truthfully, that caused me even MORE stress, since Halloween has always been one of my very favorite holidays. I feel bad that I just blew it off this year.

I didn't decorate my home, I didn't decorate my classroom, I just couldn't get in the spirit. On the bright side, I won't be running around today taking down and packing away decorations. That's definitely a plus.

Another plus is that since I didn't even buy any candy to pass out, that means there's no 'left-over' candy here to tempt me. And, Stud is too old to trick-or-treat now, so he doesn't have a stash for me to sneak from, either. Gee, the more I think about, the more this sounds like a win-win!
